Working towards saving the planet, one garment at a time
Every second, the equivalent of a rubbish truck load of clothes is burnt or buried in a landfill.-Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
There are several ways to create a sustainable fashion industry, but the simplest way to do so has been prevalent for a long time now-Reuse. We often see that old clothes are passed on in families, this is not only easy on the pocket but also beneficial for the environment. Donating clothes to the needy is also an excellent solution but it is not without its challenges. Often social workers are left with the task of sorting the donated goods to determine which items are fit for use. The clothes that can not be used are eventually buried or burnt and the problem still remains. At the clothing initiative, we ensure that every garment we collect has an extended life cycle and is disposed in an environmentally conscious way. We aim to move towards a circular economy while helping all the stakeholders along the way.
WHAT WE DO
At the clothing initiative our aim is to extend the lifecycle of clothes to the maximum extent possible and dispose them in an environmentally conscious way. We collect old clothes from your doorstep and sort them into clothes that can be worn again and those that can't be. Clothes that can be worn again our donated to the needy. The clothes that are leftover are then sent to be stitched into certain essentials like blankets, pillows and bags. These items are stitched by unemployed women who have been taught to stitch by the Manpasand Life Charitable Trust . The initiative in turn also allows these women to earn their livelihoods as we buy the stitched/upcycled items and donate them to the homeless. We welcome monetary donations so that we are able to pay these women. Essentially, your donation will help unemployed women earn their livelihoods and provide homeless people with items like blankets etc. Lastly, all the leftover scraps of clothes are sent to be recycled into new materials.
